Lowkita

Lowkita is a rising Canadian female hip-hop artist with grand intent and the passion to back it up.  Originally from Calgary, Lowkita–still only 21–is pressing to set a new mark at the forefront of Canadian’s ever-progressing music scene, both as a strong female voice, and as a dedicated and professional artist.

Lowkita literally translates as “crazy girl” in Spanish and this artist lives the definition; her sound is an infusion of classic hip-hop B-girl sass with organic raw rhythm, and her demanding stage presence will draw the attention of any crowd.

Following her natural passion for rhythm and arts, Lowkita enrolled in her first ballet lesson when she was only 4 years old, and continually developed and re-shaped that passion, expanding into jazz and funk lessons at age 8 and forming collective dance groups in her early teens.  All of this progression naturally led towards the realm of hip-hop, and it wasn’t long before Lowkita found a new form of expression.

Growing up in the gangster rap and rhythm & blues era of the 90′s, Lowkita was influenced by the work of successful artists like Skee-lo and Brandy, but it was actually the ageless art of poetics that lead her into rhythmical lyricism.  At 15, Lowkita developed a friendship with a young aspiring poet who would share her verses with Lowkita.  Given her musical influences, Lowkita wished to match the conversational power of the monologues with the complimenting backdrop of powerful songs, so she would recite her friend’s words like a dance, matching the movement and tones of the words with those of the instruments, which effectively marked the beginning of her hip-hop artistry.

Lowkita has been developing her talents ever since, working with Montreal-based group Fly Estate, and performing shows throughout Western Canada, where she has created a strong following in her home town of Calgary.  Her drive and work ethic sets her apart from other acts her age, and her writing ability even allowed her to attend radio school in Calgary, where she worked at the station writing commercials.  The stage is her true passion though, and she prides herself on having been able to open for Xzibit on two separate occasions.

Her sound is best described as powerful, rhythmic, and dynamic: her syllables jump with a melodic precision and boldness and her attitude allows her to jump out of even the most minimal of beats. Lowkita has been developing the B-girl rhythm rap for years, and the timing could not have been better: commercially successful acts like Nikki Minaj, and Halifax’s Kay have opened the public door for hard-hitting female lyricism, and Lowkita has the youth and passion to excel in this highly sought-after genre.

Lowkita is ready and hungry for the demands of the music industry, and will be releasing a mixtape and official EP, which will be a collaborative effort with fellow Vancouver-based Live Vision artist Matt Brevner.
